FO :: My Very First Quilt

Hello,my friends!

What an awful heat we are suffering here in Italy!! Still!!! And it seems that we will have such a dreadful weather during all summer… Can you imagine…?Just to describe a bit better the situation my Big man and me went to buy a portable air-conditioning and they were all gone!!! And here is how I look like almost every day…. Please, forget the red lipstick and the elegant hairstyle seen on Facebook….

Sweaty, red in face and very perplexed!!! Please, please, heat give us a break!!!!

I try to craft despite the hot weather even if that’s not always easy… the concentration lost and a lack of creativity are always around the corner… but you know me,I’m stoic! So,inspired by Sheila’s patchwork picnic blanket, I tried to sew one by myself too… I bought the wadding and the plastic tablecloth I needed the day after I sewed together the fabric squares….

… and I didn’t have problems with the wadding and the quilting itself….

…. but sewing on the plastic tablecloth….THAT WAS A REAL DISASTER!!!!

WP_20150717_15_31_58_Pro

It was hard to make it slide properly, it curved and curled continuously…. a nightmare!!! Now I know that sewing a plastic or a vinyl or a leather fabric is just too ambitious for me. I’m not even sure if I have an appropriate sewing machine foot at mine for this kind of materials. Here they are….

Is there anything suitable,in your opinion? On my hand,I decided that I’ll study my sewing machine accessories once the heat will be gone….

Back to my quilt now. πŸ™‚ I didn’t give up from it and decided to change the original project by using some fabric I have at mine for quite a while…

Its purpose didn’t change at all, since it is FO I’m using it like a rug in our living/crafting attic and I use the plastic tablecloth to protect the quilt from the dust… See what I mean in the below photo and, by the way, this is how the back side looks like …

The borders are not straight like I wanted them to be but all in all I’m satisfied… and here it is the front side…

The plastic tablecloth is bearing the scars of the many tries I made to sew it on…

WP_20150721_16_59_28_Pro

… but i decided to leave it so and remind me that I still have a lot to learn about sewing…

And finally, my quilt in use….

What do you think? Did the quilt turn out ok since it is my first one? I was thinking about sewing blankets for the little ones of my Big man and my family! In your opinion, can I dare to?

Despite the imperfection of my crafts,my aim is to have a cozy home and I see that slowly I’m achieving it. πŸ™‚ This makes me feel good indeed….

  1. It looks lovely to me. I have given up doing anything but the most straightforward sewing…the whole business with the plastic tablecloth sounds far too much for me to even think about! I do hope you get some relief from the heat soon.

    1. Thank you so very much!! I know myself well, I will try again with vinyl soon πŸ˜› It seems that the heat will last for a while and we will try to face it as we could. The good thing is that I have a perfect excuse to travel more often to Croatia and have some relief on the seaside πŸ˜›

  2. Ooooh, that quilt looks perfect in your craft attic! What a lovely space it is, too… No wonder you’re turning out so many FOs just now, even with all that heat to contend with. Speaking of which, when I was a student I lived in France during one of the hottest summers they’d had in years… Sometimes it hit 45C during the day! So on my days off I filled the bath with cold water and sat in it until I felt cold again. Give that a try… At least until the shop gets a new delivery of AC units πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you so very much for your words πŸ˜€ Oh,I have a lot of free time to dedicate to craft and I’m that kind of person who can’t just sit down with anything to do, so …. πŸ˜› πŸ˜› πŸ˜› I swear I’ll do the same if I have a bath but here we found only a shower with no bath… It doesn’t matter much though since I spend my days with some ice cubes on my ankles which swell quite a lot because of the heat. That helps me so very much to stay cool and in an acceptable fit… πŸ™‚ On the other hand,we travel to fresher places during the weekends, including Croatia and the seaside so I should complain a bit less…. πŸ˜› this weekend we are going to Berceto and a yarn store in Parma has a big sale so I hope to find some yarn for this year Xmas presents… not bad, at the end of the story…. πŸ˜›

      1. Any excuse to get away for a couple of days is good in my book! We’re due some cooler weather here over the next couple of days, so hopefully the temperature with you will drop a bit too. In the meantime, happy yarn shopping πŸ™‚

  3. It looks beautiful. When I have to sew using oilcloth I have to lightly brush some oil (I use what I cook with) on to the underside of the sewing foot and it makes it glide along the oilcloth easily πŸ˜€

    1. How I love this tips and tricks!!!! Thank you so very much for the advice! I think I can remember my Mum doing something similar and to be honest I was thinking about it…. Then I looked at my poor sewing machine and thought that she deserves to be treated with competence…. I always use too much of anything and was afraid to use to much oil…. Maybe next time when I will be more self confident 😁😁😁

      2. You say that now Tajana LOL, yet I have a sneaky feeling that as Christmas approaches you will be working at your crafts just as hard as last year πŸ™‚
